3 Free design tools you can use to create your next logo

So you’ve done your homework, and researched other businesses in your market.

You’ve determined what logo style is right for your business, looked over your color options, decided on a palette, and even picked out a sharp new typeface that matches your personality.

Now, what do you do?

Going to an agency for help might be too costly, especially when you are just getting started. This is why you might consider using an online logo maker.

What is an online logo maker?

These programs essentially try to create a drag and drop process and combine that with pre-designed elements that you can easily assemble in a matter of minutes.

Each logo maker comes with its own set of pros and cons, and even though the basic functionality of these might be free, some of the advanced features may require you to pay a small fee, so make sure you spend some time exploring these tools so that you can pick the right one for you.

Free Design Tools - Canva - Sean Maxa Design

Canva

With Canva, anyone can design their own logo. If you have never touched a piece of design software before, you can use their library of professional templates to get you started.

And if you’re feeling really ambitious, you can start with a blank canvas, upload your own design, and get to work from there.

And as of this writing, you can download a pretty high-resolution PDF of your logo, without watermarks, for free.

Free Design Tools - Wix - Sean Maxa Design

Wix

The nice thing about designing a logo with Wix is that right from the very beginning you have the option to work with a professional designer. Wink wink!

But for the purpose of writing this, I didn’t use that option but may come back to it in the future.

Instead, I chose to go the do it myself route, and after a series of likes and dislikes I had a library of options to choose from.

After you design your logo you can start customizing your typefaces and pick a color palette.

And if you really don’t like what you’ve ended up with, you can always go back and redo it.

Unfortunately, Wix only lets you download a low-res version of your logo. If you want something usable you’ll need to upgrade to one of their plans.

It should be noted that if you do subscribe to a plan, it comes with full commercial usage.

Free design tools - Square Space - Sean Maxa Design

SquareSpace

If you are looking for a way to create your logo, and get up and running almost instantly then SquareSpace is just what you need.

Enter your company name, decide on your icon, typeface, and color, and you’re ready to go.

You do have the ability to scale your text and icon, and you can move the elements around, but overall actual design choices are a little limited.

One really nice feature of Squarespace is that you can see your logo in action on a mockup of a t-shirt, website, and business card.

Free design tools - Tailer Brands - Sean Maxa Design

Bonus: Tailor Brands

This logo maker had a clever process for building out your design, I had to give it an honorable mention.

After you give them a little background information on your business, pick your favorite logo styles and typefaces, and you’ll have what feels like an endless menu of options to pick from.

And a huge bonus is that once you are done creating your logo, you can preview and order products with your logo, colors, and preferred typefaces already applied.

Should I use a logo maker?

At the end of the day, I wouldn’t recommend using an online logo for your business.

Your logo will be out there in the marketplace competing for attention, and when you use these tools, the odds that someone will have the exact same logo are pretty high.

That is why as a business owner it’s important to have the right logo strategy and pay attention to every little detail.

Because it’s often the first thing a potential customer sees when they interact with your products or services.
